Inside KMA: Catching up with Kimberly Heaton

Introducing KMA’s Catching Up With series where we will occasionally shine a spotlight on a KMA employee – providing recognition and appreciation for their contributions to the firm.  Our first employee to be featured is Kimberly Heaton – KMA’s Director of Information Services.   Kimberly recently celebrated a milestone employment anniversary, marking 25 years at KMA!   Here she answers a few questions reflecting on her Keyser Marston career.

What are your roles at KMA?

In my capacity as the Director of Information Services aka Research Librarian, I am called upon to research at any moment a myriad of topics relating to housing, land use, legislation, real estate market trends, business data etc.   I sometimes embark on really unique and esoteric research topics while other times I am pulling published data on a variety of land uses and real estate markets.   I also maintain an internal digital library portal as well as an online catalog to help my fellow employees access reports and data.   I diligently track KMA projects, relevant industry trends and legislation in the news.  I also help with marketing efforts and tracking RFP/Qs.  So basically, I wear a few hats!  It’s part of my job to help keep everyone abreast of the latest developments.

What is your favorite part of working at KMA?

I love being a team player and providing necessary support for my colleagues behind the scenes.  My favorite aspect of research is to find that elusive data and/or the perfect source to support our analysis of a client project.   I also appreciate variety in my day-to-day responsibilities, while also being challenged by new technology and evolving data sources.  While I usually don’t interface directly with our clientele, I find it very gratifying to know that I have contributed in a small way to a successful real estate project, especially those that bring much-needed affordable housing and public benefits to local communities.

What do you enjoy outside of KMA ?

I embrace the great outdoors and always looking forward to the next adventure.  I enjoy hiking, biking, camping, and kayaking to name a few activities.  Additionally I love live music and appreciate the Bay Area music scene, as well trivia nights at the local pub, trying new recipes, cozy movie hang outs, and curling up with a good book.
